CM Podcast 215 – The Dark Phoenix Saga Part 2

Welcome back to the 2nd half of our discussion on Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s seminal X-Men storyline: The Dark Phoenix Saga.

In this podcast, we pick up were we left off: The X-Men escaping the clutches of the Hellfire Club and heading back to the X-Mansion. During their flight back, Jean Grey loses control of the Phoenix and the Dark Phoenix emerges…

As you can tell from these covers, the X-Men do not have a good time when the Dark Phoenix is around. The Dark Phoenix attempts to kill all the X-Men, then she goes and snuffs out a galaxy and finally the X-Men have to fight for their lives and the fate of Jean Grey…on the moon. There is a lot of story and we try to cover all of it and more in the podcast.

We also take a look behind the scenes to find out what decisions Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter and co-plotters: Chris Claremont and John Byrne made to come to the epic conclusion of the X-Men story.

Towards the end of the podcast, I explain why the Legion of Superheroes (group on the left) look a lot like the Shi’ar Imperial Guard (group on the right).

If you have never read the Dark Phoenix Saga, we highly recommend checking it out. You can read it digitally through Marvel.com or buy a trade paperback like we did. Thanks for listening and we will see you next week.

CM Podcast 191 – Xmen God Loves, Man Kills

I love doing comic reviews and I especially love it when it’s a comic that I have heard about but never had the opportunity to read until now. This is one of those podcasts.

X-men God Loves, Man Kills is the 5th comic in the Marvel Graphic Novel series that came out in 1982. The original is hard to find but, thanks to reprints – you can get a cheap version of it today and, depending on which version you get, you’ll get bonus art and interviews with the creators.

On the left is the original copy of the comic that came out in 1982 and on the right is the current reprint that I purchased. The story was written by long time X-men scribe, Chris Claremont with art by Brent Anderson.

What also makes this a unique podcast – Jon actually read this comic originally when it came out. HE ACTUALLY READ A COMIC THAT I HAD NOT READ! This is a rare feat.

In the podcast we talk about what makes the Marvel Graphic Novel series so special and what was happening in the world during 1982 that actually influenced the comic. There is some reminiscing and shouting – you know, our usual comic talk.

Then we get into talking about the comic. We are introduced to Reverend William Stryker. He is a televangelist that loves God but is not found of mutants.

Stryker apostatizing humanity over mutants

Stryker, in fact, hates mutants with all his might…

I like how Nightcrawler is like “What did I do?”

As you can see in 2 panels that Reverend William Stryker is a very bad, no-good, terrible person and you will find out just what lengths he will go to to eliminate mutants from the face of the earth. If Stryker seems familiar to you, that is because the story from this comic was used in the movie X-men 2 AKA X2. William Stryker is the name of the main villain in the movie.

We talk about the story, its message and our thoughts on Stryker and his army called The Purifiers. We do spoil the story but if you saw X2, you already know how the story goes.

That’s it for this week.

CM podcast 157 – Deadpool 2

2 years ago we witnessed an R-rated comic book movie called Deadpool and it was good.  We did a podcast on the the movie and more.

Last week, the highly anticipated sequel came out.  Is it as good as the original or is it Deadpoo?  We will tell you what we thought of… Deadpool 2!

dp2_01

We will tell you up front – this movie is as good as the original (even better, maybe).  Being a Deadpool movie, you know there will be jokes, violence and swearing but this movie also as heart and compassion (which were in the original – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it).  Jon and I give our opinions on the movie and we try not to spoil too much on what makes it great.

CM Podcast 136 – 3rd Annual Hazies Awards

It’s the end of the year, true believers so time for another Year End Wrap Up podcast.  At this time, most comic podcasts would do their “Top 10 Favorite Comics” or “Top 10 Worst Comic Reads“.  Not us!  Not this podcast!  We refuse to conform to the norm!!

Every year we do a fictitious award show based on comic events and comic books that came out during 2017.  We call it The Hazie Awards!  Now on to…

The 3rd Annual Hazie Awards

(2017 edition)

(I have to get a graphic or something for this part next year).

Here is the award that we do not give out to anyone

CM Podcast 125 – Fall Comic Shows and Movies

The air starts to feel cooler, the days grow shorter and a butt-load of new shows debut on all the networks.  It must be Fall!  There are many comic related shows that are out now but Jon and I decided to watch 2 shows we swore we were never going to watch: The Inhumans and The Gifted.

We watched the first episode of both shows, we give an overview of the episode, some pros and cons and finally: will we continue to watch the series.  Our answers may surprise you.

We also do a quick recap of the upcoming movie trailers for: Thor Ragnarok, Justice League and The New Mutants.

Thanks for listening.

CM Podcast 122 – Longshot Miniseries

It seems like the 80s are all the rage today.  You have Stranger Things which is set in the 80s and Stephen King’s It which originally came out the 80s and the 2017 movie was based in that decade.

I’m not saying the Comics Misremembered.com is responsible for all this 80s nostalgia that’s been going around recently but is it a coincidence our podcast came out almost 3 year ago focusing on many 80s comics and then Stanger Things, The Goldbergs and It all came out after?  Hmmmmm.  Makes you wonder.

Well, we keep the 80s nostalgia going with a look at the Longshot miniseries which was produced by Marvel and published originally in 1985.

Longshot was an original character created by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams.

We really wouldn’t call this a review.  It is more of a study on a comic that tried to do something more that heroes and villains.  This comic was trying to expose people to much headier concepts like Existentialism, Metaphysics and Free Will vs Fate.  Jon and I missed the philosophical concepts as kids but we appreciate them years later.

Jon and I also talk about Existentialism and the Metaphysics of Luck at the end of the podcast.

We had a great time misremembering everything about Longshot and getting the chance to read it again.

Comics Misremembered Podcast 94

So I am trying something new with this post and putting the podcast at the start.  Hope you like it.

logan_1

There are 3 people on the podcast this week: Jim, Jon and Rick.  You may remember Rick made his debut appearance on our Podcast for Captain America: Civil War movie.

This week we are talking about Logan – The final Wolverine movie.

Rick was so excited about the Logan movie that he asked if he could join us.  So of course Rick was welcome to record with us on this podcast.

This is a spoil filled show so do not listen if you plan on seeing the movie in the near future.  Lots of discussion and debate and a few comic book references.  Enjoy.

CM Podcast 86 – Death of X Review

There is a cloud of Terrigen mist that is sweeping the Earth changing humans into…INHUMANS!  More with each passing day.  The mist is also killing all the mutants that come in contact with it!?  Soon there will be no mutants left and only Inhumans.  This could be the…(dramatic drum roll)…Death of X.

death-of-x-full

Are you excited?  That is the starting premise in the 4 issue limited series from the House of Ideas, Marvel.  I mean, that is an awesome start, right?!

Then you also get awesome variant covers.  Some are even reproductions of classic covers like these:

Who needs story when these covers are with the purchase price alone, amirite!  What?  You want to know about the actual story?  Really?  These covers aren’t selling you?  Okay.  I will tell you about the story but just remember: Be careful of what you ask for because you might just get it.  If you listen to the podcast, you will hear all the details of Death of X.  Fair warning: Spoiler Alert.  We cover it all.

CM Podcast 63 – Amalgam Comics Part 1

Marvel and DC crossover comic events are very rare nowadays but that was not always the case.  In fact, 20 years ago was one of the best Marvel/DC comic events that ever happened and it was called the Amalgam Universe!

amalgam01

These Amalgam comics were the result of a battle between the Marvel and DC universes…

versus

The champions fought each other in a limited series called DC Versus Marvel (or Marvel Versus DC depending on which issue you were buying).  The heroes battles each other and it caused such a mess that is smashed the 2 universes together in 1 amalgamated universe.

Jon and I reflect back on the events that lead up to the Amalgam Comics to be published.  This will be a 2 part podcast so tune in next week for part 2.

CM Podcast 61: Funeral for the X-Men pt. 2

Welcome back to the 2nd and final part of our Wake for the death of the X-Men.

This week, Jon and I talk about briefly about the 90s cartoon series and then we continue to talk on the following crossovers:

  • Fall of the Mutants
  • Inferno
  • The X-tinction Agenda

Some misremembered moments in the podcast:

  • I put the X-men in the outback after the Fall of the Mutants when it actually happen after Inferno.
  • I called Donald Pierce’s Reavers the 3rd version of Marauders.
  • I mistakenly call Skullbuster the wrong name of Skullbreaker.
  • Reese on the Reavers is a reference to the Terminator movies, not Aliens.

We really enjoyed reading about the X-men’s adventures and will miss them greatly.

CM Podcast 60: Funeral for the X-men pt. 1

Hello Comic Misremembered Podcast fans!  Welcome to the newest edition of the podcast.  This week we pay tribute to one of the greatest comic series that seems to be coming to an end in October and that is Uncanny (Extraordinary) X-Men.

In the July Previews, there are no listing for X-Men books for October and 1 listing for a book called “Death of X” which leads us to believe that Marvel and Disney are officially getting rid of the X-Men once and for all.

We decided that if Marvel is killing the X-Men then we are going to give them a decent Wake and remember (or misremember) some of our favorite moments in X-Men comic history.

Join us as we eulogize one of the greatest comics teams that have ever existed.

CM Podcast 54: X-men Apocalypse Movie Review

It’s the beginning of the Summer Movie push.   Captain America: Civil War came out and was spectacular.  The next major comic franchise is X-men Apocalypse and it is…good?  Good.  It’s good.  I can confidently say it is a good movie.

xmen_apocalypse

Why is it good and not great?  Well, we review the pros and cons of the movie in the podcast.  We also give a quick history of Apocalypse in the Marvel Comic Universe and is he the same character in the Fox Movie Universe.

**Major Spoilers Ahead**

mjr spoiler

In order for Jon and myself to give you an informed opinion about the movie and why we only think it’s good, we have to talk about the plot and characters so this is your warning.  There are many spoilers in this podcast.

Thanks for listening and see you next week,
