Free Comic Book Day was Saturday, May 7th (I thought it was 5/14) and comic shops all over America gave away tons of free comics.
Jon and I were both working so we did not get a chance to go to our local swap and get in on all the free comic swag. Luckily for us, our local swap is cool and they saved us a few issue that they knew we would like.
We review the 3 free comics we picked up:
Rom, The Spaceknight #0
Civil War II #0
We go over the stories that are in the comic and ask the question: Will we buy the upcoming comics?
My apologies for confusing everyone at the start of the podcast. I said it was the 53rd podcast but it is really only the 52nd podcast. Sorry.
Imagine if Marvel allowed for all of their comics to be “hacked” for 1 month and dozens of jokes and parodies were loaded into all their comics and then everything would go back to normal the following month.
This special, magical moment did happen in April of 1984 when Marvel allowed the Assistant Editors to run the books.
If you are not familiar with this time in comics, the premise is that all the regular Editors needed to leave the Marvel offices and attend a Comic Con. While away, the comics would be supervised by the Assistant Editors to ensure the comics would get out on time. And as the saying goes “While the cat is away, the mice will play.”
Assistant Editors Month was just a month long April Fools joke that resulted in some great parody stories and artwork. I was a young punk in 1984 so I relive my memories of buying some of these hilarious books and wish that Marvel would do a similar stunt with today’s comics.
Here are the covers to some of the comics I reviewed:

The stars aligned in order to make Assistant Editors Month happen – In 1984, Marvel was not owned by a billion dollar corporation and not bogged down in endless crossover events. They came up with a silly idea and hit a home run with these books. Will we ever get another version of Assistant Editors month? As the magic 8-Ball might say “Chances look cloudy.”
