CM Podcast 197 – Giantkiller with Dan Brereton

Normally on Comics Misremembered, we start the podcast off with a small piece of music and then explain how that clip of music relates to the topic of the podcast.

This week we did not get a chance to go over the music track – which is David Bowie’s Scary Monsters (Super Creeps) because we wanted to devote all our time to out very special guest – Dan Brereton!!

Dan joins the podcast this week because he wants to talk about a very excellent kickstarter project he is promoting: The 20th anniversary collection of his Giantkiller comic.

You can see the kickstarter here:

Dan goes over why he is choosing to work with Kickstarter.com for this and many future projects. We also go over the history of Giantkiller – it started as a DC comic. DC offer to put his main protagonist, Jack in some of the other DC comics like JLA and Dan said “No”. Why you ask? Well, he tells all in the podcast.

We go on to talk about the future of his Giantkiller characters and I even pitch him an “original” idea for a future story.

It was a great time and we look forward to talking with Dan on his future projects.

Your comics pal,

Jim

CM Podcast 114 – Nocturnals: Sinister Path

We are very excited to have a special guest this week, Dan Brereton!

DB_01

Writer and artist of Nocturnals and painter on The Psycho, DC’s Batgirl and Robin ThrillKiller, and hundreds of other comics. He is a legend.

We talk with him about his career, San Diego Comics Con, and his current Kickstarter campaign…

We then focus on his new comic in the continuing series of The Nocturnals called Nocturnals: Sinister Path.

Dan gives us a a quick recap of the new comics and then Jon and I review the story. We go over story elements and compare it to other greats works of art like L A Confidential and Leon The Professional.

We both think that this book is great and deserves your attention. If you cannot get to a comic shop, you can pick it up Comixology (along with the other Nocturnal titles).

Things that I took away:

  • The correct way to pronounce his last name.
  • Dan Brereton has been going to the San Diego Comic Con for 30 years, not 29.
  • The great Frank Franzetta passed away in 2010 and for some reason, I thought he was still alive and painting.
  • I called Doc Horror by the name Doc Hammer. Doc Hammer is actually the co-creator of the Venture Bros, not one of the characters in Nocturnals.

This podcast was a blast and we had a great time with Dan Brereton. We to hope to have Dan back in the near future for other podcast projects.
