CM Podcast 284 – The Neonomicon (comic 2011)

Welcome to the Halloween edition of the Comics Misremembered.

If the image above didn’t scare you away then continue on, intrepid listener. But be warned! You will have to be made of much sterner stuff to listen to this week’s podcast.

This week, we are covering a Cosmic Horror comic called The Neonomicon.

Look at that guy at the top of the cover! His mind can’t handle what’s going on in this book.

The Neonomicon is by writer Alan Moore and artist Jacen Burrows. It was published by Avatar Press back in 2011 at 4 issues. 2 of the issues are reprints of an earlier collaboration between Moore and Burrows called The Courtyard and the remaining 2 issues are just a continuation and conclusion to the story.

In the podcast, I go over the origins of Avatar Press, Alan Moore and his love of H.P. Lovecraft, The many, many Lovecraft references in the book (I probably missed a few) and we talk about the actual story.

I keep it mostly spoiler free and do warn you when I am going to spoiler the rest of the comic in case you do want to read it. I highly recommend picking this up and reading. Especially during October!

CM Podcast 73 – Locke & Key

It’s October so the weather gets cooler, the leaves change colors and the Red Sox are not in another MLB playoff.  Do not despair!  We have great comics to read and discuss!  This week we do a retro review of Locke & Key.

Locke & Key is about the Locke Family and how a tragedy moves the family from their familiar surroundings in California to the strange (and fictitious) island of Lovecraft, Massachusetts where they discover Key House.

Locke & Key was originally published in 2008 and ran for a little under 40 issues.  It is a supernatural horror comics that has tons of heart.  I read the original run and Jon just started and he is hooked.

In the podcast we review the comic, give you a few tips on some horror movies you should check out before Halloween and go over some history of Salem, MA and how it relates to Locke & Key.

We talk about the Lovecraft themes that run through each book and the overall story.  All these books are great and you should check them all out.
